How much will it cost?
Aside from the year, make and model of your vehicle, all that you know is that something is not right with your transmission. It may be something outside the transmission that could be a minor fix, who knows? Even if you can describe it to a tee, there are quite a number of things that it could be.
Please understand that you are giving us only partial information, but yet you would like to have a definitive answer to the question ... HOW MUCH?
At this stage asking How much? may be a waste of time and effort. You see, with only partial information an accurate answer is impossible. To try to answer "how much" before seeing the vehicle and getting into your specific transmission could be terribly misleading and we choose not to do that.
At Certified Transmissions we clearly understand that you don't have a lot of experience fixing transmissions and you want to choose a good shop to do your work. But you don't know how to pick shop A over shop B. By not knowing the technicalities of our field, you really don't know how to shop for a transmission, so you default to what should be a simple question – How Much?
Here is a typical scenario in our industry – the customer calls a shop with the symptoms and asks how much. Based on the experience of similar transmissions the shop knows the price window where most repairs seem to end up ... and let's say it's $2000 to $2500. Usually shops will give you a real low-ball price at the very bottom end of that window – knowing all along that they will give you the "real" price when you take your car in.
An important note here: diagnosing over the phone and pricing over the phone is NEVER accurate so why would you waste your time doing it? If you were to keep pushing for a price, it is not dishonest for them to pop off with a price, it just invites misunderstandings and then hard feelings later — which is why we choose not to do it ... we believe that life is far too short for hard feelings and would much rather part as friends right up front than skip the steps that we know work.
If you can see that choosing a shop based on price is really a big fat waste of your time, how about choosing one based on the quality of job they will do for you? So let's say you ask 10 shops, "do you guys do good work" ... who is going to tell you, "Oh, well we are OK I guess". Really who would say anything like that? We all will tell you that we are "great, the best", or something like that.
By simply reading what we are happy to share with you, you could literally save many hundreds of dollars over the long haul. We would love to work with you and hope you see the value in not skipping any steps to make sure you really need our help.
If you are in need of transmission work, be assured the price we quote is the price we charge. There are no hidden costs. We'll give you an itemized statement and even explain what each item is and how it effects your transmission.
The transmission is a complicated assembly and many different things may go wrong with it. Some easy-to-reach small parts may cost under $100 including labor. At the other extreme, it may cost a thousand dollars, or more, to repair or rebuild a severely damaged transmission.
Your best bet is to invest in inexpensive routine maintenance. If repairs or major work is recommended, it's in your best interest to get a WRITTEN estimate. Failure to receive any sort of formal estimate can put most trusting consumers in a very awkward position. If you choose to shop; ask questions like:
- Can I have a written estimate before repairs are performed?
- What's the warranty?
- Is it a nationwide warranty?
- Is it pro-rated like tires or batteries?
- Do you itemize parts and labor?
- How long have you been in business?
- Are you a member of the BBB?
