How often should I service my transmission?

Don't wait until you suspect a problem with your transmission to have the fluid checked or flushed. Ideally you want to flush the tranmission BEFORE the fluid gets bad. Generally, today's transmissions have a paper element filter, much like an engine oil filter. However, unlike an engine oil filter, there is no bypass provision built into the filter or its lubricating system. What this means to you is that if the filter becomes restricted, the transmission can effectively "starve" for fluid grossly accelerating wear and potential life expectancy of the transmission. For this reason alone, we recommend you should change your transmission fluid and filter every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. This is NOT to be confused with fluid filter flushes that are done through the transmission cooler line systems like commonly promoted by well-meaning shops who do not specialize in transmission repair like we do. These flushes usually don't include removing and cleaning of the transmission pan, let alone changing of the filter and can often aggrivate a partially restricted filter making it become more restricted by virtue of the flushing process. However, contrary to popular belief, these flushes can't invent problems by themselves, they only aggrivate a pre-existing condition only in the worst cases. They are vary rarely, if ever, have been known to create a problem from nowhere.

picture of a mechanic working on a car Before you drain or flush your transmission fluid you should pull the dip stick and look at the fluid. If it is dark, burnt smelling, and you see little flakes or specks in it, DON'T DRAIN OR FLUSH IT. These could be signs of trouble and should be looked at only by an expert who is experienced in transmission diagnosis and repair. If the fluid and/or filter are changed before we have the opportunity to check your vehicle we may not be able to diagnosis it properly. Any debris in the fluid will aid us in the diagnosis and estimating the repair costs.
