Should I let a shop do an "RDI"?
Experienced, ASE-certified technicians can usually determine if a transmission problem is internal or external and will provide a written estimate on external repairs without removing your transmission.
If the problem is determined to be inside the transmission the technician will recommend the transmission be removed and disassembled for close inspection to give an accurate estimate, this is know as Remove, Disassemble, Inspection (RDI). Once the transmission has been disassembled the internal damage can be accurately assessed and a written estimate can be provided to you. There is a fee associated with the RDI which is generally waived upon approval of the repair. However, the RDI fee does NOT include reassembly if you decide not to have the repair done. The fee covers labor expenses incurred for the disassembly.
